Charles and Annette Staubs of Merrill, circled in black, traveled to Thiotte, Haiti, for eight days with the Haitian Medical Mission of Wisconsin to provide medical relief.
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – A local husband and wife who cared for hundreds of Haitians during a weeklong medical mission to the country in January will share their story this weekend in Wausau.
Charles and Annette Staubs will show pictures of their trip and relate their personal experiences during a presentation after the 10:30 mass Sunday morning at St. Anne's Church. The presentation is free and open to the public.
The Merrill couple was supposed to arrive in Haiti on January 15th but had their trip delayed by two weeks because of the January 12th earthquake.
The Staubs traveled with others as part of the Haiti Medical Mission of Wisconsin. They spent eight days in Thiotte, about three hours south of the capital Port-au-Prince, and treated earthquake refugees who had fled the capital to less damaged areas of the country.
“It really was a gift to us to be able to help these people,” Annettee said. “Because the solidarity with them is just a great gift for our own faith.”
It was the second medical mission the Staubs had taken to the Caribbean country. They plan to return for a regularly scheduled mission trip next winter but may go back sooner, Annette said.
